Nikon closes compact camera production subsidiary in China

The Board of Directors’ of Nikon Corporation has decided to discontinue the operations of the company’s consolidated subsidiary Nikon Imaging (China) Co., Ltd. with immediate effect. Established in June, 2002, the manufacturing site in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China, produced a significant part of Nikon’s Coolpix compact digital cameras as well as lens units.

According to press release, the closure, which is part of Nikon’scompany-wide restructuring plan announced in November 2016, is due to the rapid decline of the compact digital camera market due to the rise of smartphones. As part of restructuring the Imaging Products Business, the Company will focus more on high value-add products.

China’s position as one of the most important markets in the world will remain unchanged, Nikon said, adding that Nikon Imaging (China) Sales Co., Ltd. (NICS), the Company’s sales subsidiary in Shanghai, continues in full operation as normal. According to a report in Nikkei Asian Review, part of the production of the Chinese plant will be outsourced, while Nikon continues the camera production in its facilities in Thailand and Japan. The company expects to sell 4.8 million digital cameras overall in the fiscal year ending March 2018, 24 percent less than in the previous year. For the compact segment, sales are projected to decrease by 28 percent.
