CeBit gives up

The CeBit in Hannover is history: In view of ”reduces space bookings for CeBit 2019“, Deutsche Messe AG, Hannover, Germany, has announced it is streamlining its event portfolio. The industry-related digital topics of what was once the largest computer fair in the world are to be integrated into the Hannover Messe. Other topics will be developed into specialist events for decision-makers from vertical industries. With the reorganization of the trade fair portfolio, there is also a change in the management of Deutsche Messe AG: Oliver Frese, the Board Member in charge of CeBit, has asked the Executive Commitee of the Supervisory Board to release him from his duties as of December 31, 2018. The commitee agreed to his request.

Technological developments within the digital economy had reduced for horizontal trade shows such as CeBit, explained Deutsche Messe AG. Since the innovative impact of digitization were of particular importance in industrial application industries, digitization had become the dominant topic in almost all industry trade shows. This had influenced the trade show policy of many companies including the classical core exhibitors of CeBit, to use more targeted events as platforms to generate new business.

This year, CeBit had tried to reinvent itself by relocating the event from March to June and redefining its contents. The new concept of CeBit with a combination of trade show, conference and tech-festival could not stop the downward trend in visitors – with 120,000 visitors, the 2018 event attracted around 80,000 less people than in 2017. As the negative trend in floor bookings across all thematic segments could not be stopped, the end of CeBit was sealed.
